Haftara of Parashat Vayeira – 42:11

Melachim II (II Kings) Chapter 4

Next Week

1. Now a woman, of the wives of the disciples of the prophets, cried out to Elisha, saying, “Your servant, my husband, has died, and you know that your servant did fear the Lord; and the creditor has come to take my two children for himself as slaves.

2. And Elisha said to her, “What shall I do for you? Tell me what you have in the house.” And she said, “Your maidservant has nothing at all in the house except a jug of oil.

3. And he said, “Borrow vessels for yourself from outside, from all your neighbours; do not borrow only a few empty vessels.

4. And you shall come and close the door about yourself and about your sons, and you shall pour upon all these vessels; and the full one you shall carry away.

5. And she went away from him and closed the door about herself and about her sons; they were bringing [vessels] to her and she was pouring.

6. And it was when the vessels were full, that she said to her son, “Bring me another vessel,” and he said to her, “There is no other vessel.” And the oil stopped.

7. And she came and told the man of God: and he said, “Go sell the oil and pay your debt; and you and your sons will live with the remainder.

8. And it was that day that Elisha went as far as Shunem, and there was a prominent woman who prevailed upon him to eat a meal; and it was, whenever he would pass, he would stop there to eat a meal.

9. And she said to her husband, “Behold now I know that he is a holy man of God, who passes by us regularly.

10. Now let us make a small walled upper chamber, and place there for him a bed, a table, a chair, and a lamp; and it will be that when he comes to us, he will turn into there.

11. And it was one day that he went there, that he turned into the upper chamber and lay down there.

12. And he said to Gehazi his servant, “Call this Shunemitess;” and he called her, and she stood before him.

13. And he said to him, “Please say to her, ‘Behold you have busied yourself on our account with all this trouble. What is there to do for you? Can we speak on your behalf to the king or to the general of the army?’ ” And she said, “I dwell in the midst of my people.”

14. And he said, “Now what can we do for her? ” And Gehazi said, “Indeed, she has no son, and her husband is old.

15. And he said, “Summon her,” and he summoned her, and she stood at the doorway.

16. And he said, “At this time next year, when you will be alive like now, you will be embracing a son.” And she said, “No, my lord, O man of God, do not fail your maidservant.

17. And the woman conceived and bore a son, at this time a year later, which Elisha had spoken to her.

18. And the child grew up; and it was one day that he went out to his father, to the reapers.

19. And he said to his father, “My head! My head!” And he said to the servant, “Carry him to his mother.

20. And he carried him and brought him to his mother, and he sat on her knees until noon, and he died.

21. And she went up and laid him on the bed of the man of God, and she closed about him and left.

22. And she called her husband and said, “Please send me one of the servants and one of the she-asses; and I will run up to the man of God and return.

23. And he said, “Why are you going to him today; it is neither the New Moon nor the Sabbath.” And she said, “It’s all right.”

24. And she saddled the she-ass, and she said to her servant, “Drive and go forward. Don’t keep back from riding because of me unless I tell you.”

25. And she went and came to the man of God, to Mt. Carmel; and it was when the man of God saw her from afar, that he said to Gehazi his servant, “Here is that Shunemmitess.

26. Now please run toward her, and say to her, ‘Are you well? Is your husband well? Is the child well?’ ” And she said, “We are well.”

27. And she came to the man of God to the mountain, and she took hold of his feet; and Gehazi approached to push her away. Now the man of God said, “Let her be, for her soul is bitter to her, and the Lord hid it from me and did not tell me.”

28. And she said, “Did I ask for a son from my lord? Did I not say, ‘Do not mislead me?’ “

29. And he said to Gehazi, “Gird your loins and take my staff in your hand and go. If you meet anyone, do not greet him, and if anyone greets you, do not answer him: and you shall place my staff on the lad’s face.”

30. And the lad’s mother said, “As the Lord lives and by your life, I will not leave you.” And he rose and went after her.

31. And Gehazi went ahead of them, and he placed the staff on the lad’s face, and there was no sound nor any attention; and he returned toward him and told him saying, “The lad has not awakened.”

32. And Elisha came into the house, and behold the lad was dead, laid out on his bed.

33. And he came and closed the door about both of them; and he prayed to the Lord.

34. And he went up and lay on the child, and placed his mouth on his mouth and his eyes on his eyes and his palms on his palms, and he prostrated himself upon him: and the child’s flesh became warm.

35. And he returned and walked in the house once here and once there, and he went up and prostrated himself upon him: and the lad sneezed up to seven times, and the lad opened his eyes.

36. And he summoned Gehazi and said, “Call this Shunemmitess.” And he called her, and she came to him, and he said, “Pick up your son.”

37. And she came and fell at his feet and bowed to the ground; and she picked up her son and departed.

38. And Elisha returned to Gilgal; and the famine was in the land, and the disciples of the prophets were sitting before him. And he said to his servant, “Set the large pot on the fire and cook a stew for the disciples of the prophets.”

39. And one went out to the field to gather herbs; and he found a vine in the field and gathered from it wild mushrooms his garment full; and he came and diced them into the pot of stew, for they did not know.

40. And they poured for the people to eat; and it was when they were eating of the stew, that they cried out and said, “Death is in the pot, O man of God!” and they could not eat.

41. And he said, “Fetch flour,” and he threw [it] into the pot, and he said, “Pour it for the people and let them eat. ” And there was no harmful substance in the pot.

42. And a man came from Baal-Shalishah, and he brought to the man of God bread of the first-fruits, twenty loaves of barley bread and sheaves of fresh grain in their shells; and he said, “Give to the people and let them eat.

43. And his servant said, “How will I give this before one hundred men? And he said, “Give the people and let them eat, for so has the Lord said, ‘They shall eat and leave over.’ “

44. And he placed it before them, and they ate and left over, according to the word of the Lord.

Haftara of Parashat Chayei Sarah – 33:15

Melachim I (I Kings) Chapter 1

Next Week

1. And king David was old, he came into his old age, and they covered him with clothes, but he was not warmed.

2. And his servants said to him, “Let them seek for my lord the king a young girl, a virgin, and she shall stand before the king, and she shall be to him a warmer, and she shall lie in your lap, and it shall be warm for my lord the king.”

3. And they sought a beautiful young girl throughout the borders of Israel, and found Abishag the Shunemitess and brought her to the king.

4. And the young girl was very beautiful, and she was a warmer to the king, and she ministered to him, but the king did not know her.

5. And Adoniahu the son of Haggith exalted himself saying: ‘I will be king,’ and he made for himself chariots and horsemen and fifty men to run before him.

6. And his father had not angered him all his days saying, “Why have you done so?” And he too was of very handsome appearance, and she bore him after Absalom.

7. And he conferred with Joab the son of Zeruiah and with Abiathar the priest and they helped [by following] after Adoniahu.

8. And Zadok the priest and Benaiahu the son of Jehoiada, and Nathan the prophet, and Shimei and Rei, and the mighty men, who were with David, were not with Adoniahu.

9. And Adoniahu slew sheep and oxen and fatlings, by the stone of Zoheleth which is beside En-Rogel, and he called all his brothers, the king’s sons, and all the men of Judah, the kings servants.

10. And Nathan the prophet and Benaiahu and the mighty men and his brother, Solomon, he did not call.

11. And Nathan said to Bath-Sheba, Solomon’s mother, saying, “You have surely heard that Adoniahu the son of Haggith has reigned, and our lord, David, did not know [it].

12. And now come and I shall council you with advice, and you shall save your life and the life of your son Solomon.

13. Go and come to king David, and you shall say to him, ‘Surely, you, my lord the king, did swear to your maid saying that, ‘Solomon your son will reign after me and he shall sit upon my throne,’ Now why did Adoniahu reign?”

14. Behold, you are talking there with the king, and I shall come in after you and I shall complete your words.”

15. And Bath Sheba came in unto the king, into the chamber; and the king was very old; and Abishag the Shunemitess ministered the king.

16. And Bath-Sheba bowed her head, and prostrated herself unto the king, and the king said, “What is your [wish]?”

17. And she said to him, “My lord, you swore by the Lord your God to your maid, that, ‘Solomon, your son, shall reign after me, and he shall sit on my throne.’

18. And now, behold Adoniahu has reigned, and now my lord the king, you did not know.

19. And he has slain oxen and fatlings and sheep in abundance and he called all the king’s sons and Abiathar the priest and Joab the general of the army, but Solomon, your servant, he did not call.

20. And you, my lord the king, the eyes of all Israel are upon you, that you should tell them, who shall sit on the throne of my lord the king after him.

21. And [otherwise] when my lord the king shall sleep with his fathers, and I and my son Solomon shall be [considered] offenders.”

22. And behold, she was still speaking with the king, and Nathan the prophet came.

23. And they told the king saying, “Behold, Nathan the prophet.” And he came in before the king and he prostrated himself unto the king upon his face, to the ground.

24. And Nathan said, “My lord the king, did you say ‘Adoniahu shall reign after me and he shall sit upon my throne?’”

25. For he has gone down this day and has slain oxen and fatlings and sheep in abundance, and he called all the King’s sons, and the officers of the army, and Abiathar the priest, and behold they eat and drink before him, and they said, “Long live King Adoniahu.”

26. And me, [even] me your servant, and Zadok the priest and Benaiahu the son of Yehoiada and Solomon, your servant, he did not call.

27. If this matter stems from my lord the king, [I wonder that] you have not informed your servant who should sit on the throne of my lord the king after him.

28. And king David answered and said, “Call Bath Sheba to me. And she came before the king and stood before the king.

29. And he swore and said, “[I swear as] God lives who redeemed my soul from all distress.

30. Indeed, as I swore to you by the Lord God of Israel saying, ‘Surely Solomon, your son, shall reign after me and he shall sit on my throne in my stead,’ surely, so will I do this day.”

Chapter 20

2. Then came the word of the Lord to me, saying:

3. “Son of man, speak to the elders of Israel and say to them: So says the Lord God, Have you come to inquire of Me? As true as I live, I will not be inquired of by you! says the Lord God.

4. Will you contend with them? Will you contend, O son of man? Let them know the abominations of their fathers

5. And you shall say to them: So says the Lord God, On the day I chose Israel, then I lifted up My hand to the seed of the house of Jacob, and made Myself known to them in the land of Egypt, when I lifted up My hand to them, saying: I am the Lord your God.

6. On that day I lifted up My hand to them to bring them out of the land of Egypt, to a land that I had sought out for them, flowing with milk and honey; it is the glory of all the lands.

7. And I said to them: Every man cast away the despicable idols from before his eyes, and pollute not yourselves with the idols of Egypt; I am the Lord your God.

8. But they rebelled against Me and would not consent to hearken to Me; they did not cast away, every man, the despicable idols from before their eyes, neither did they forsake the idols of Egypt; and I said to pour out My wrath over them, to give My anger full rein over them, in the midst of the land of Egypt.

9. But I wrought for the sake of My Name so that it should not be desecrated before the eyes of the nations in whose midst they were, before whose eyes I made Myself known to them, to bring them out of the land of Egypt.

10. And I brought them out of the land of Egypt, and I brought them into the wilderness.

11. And I gave them My statutes, and My ordinances I made known to them, which, if a man perform, he shall live through them.

12. Moreover, I gave them My Sabbaths to be for a sign between Me and them, to know that I, the Lord, make them holy.

13. But the house of Israel rebelled against Me in the wilderness; they walked not in My statutes, and they despised My ordinances, which, if a man keep, he will live through them, and My Sabbaths they desecrated exceedingly. Then I said to pour out My wrath upon them in the wilderness, to make an end to them.

14. And I wrought for the sake of My Name, so it should not be desecrated before the eyes of the nations before whose eyes I had brought them out.

15. But I also lifted up My hand to them in the wilderness, that I would not bring them into the land which I had given them, flowing with milk and honey; it is the glory of all lands.

16. Because they despised My ordinances, and in My statutes they did not walk, and My Sabbaths they desecrated- for their heart went constantly after their idols.

17. Nevertheless, My eye looked pityingly upon them, not to destroy them, and I did not make an end to them in the wilderness.

18. But I said to their children in the wilderness: ‘In the statutes of your fathers do not walk and do not observe their ordinances, and do not defile yourselves with their idols.

19. I am the Lord your God: walk in My statutes, and keep My ordinances and fulfill them.

20. And keep My Sabbaths holy so that they be a sign between Me and you, that you may know that I am the Lord your God.’

Chapter 22

1. And the word of the Lord came to me, saying:

2. “And you, son of man, will you judge, will you judge the city of bloodshed and let her know all her abominations?

3. Then you shall say; So said the Lord God: O city that sheds blood in her midst, even now, when her time is approaching, and makes idols over her to defile herself.

4. By the blood that you have shed you have become laden with guilt, and by your idols that you have made you have become defiled; and you have made your days draw near, and you have come up to your years; therefore have I made you an object of shame to the nations and [a subject of] gossip to all the lands.

5. Those that are near and those that are far from you will gossip about you-you-whose name is so befouled, in whom the turmoil is so great.

6. Behold, the princes of Israel were in you, each one by his own arm in order to shed blood.

7. Father and mother are held light in you; they have dealt against the stranger with oppression in your midst; orphan and widow have they wronged in you.

8. My holy things have you despised, and My Sabbaths have you profaned.

9. Talebearers have been in you in order to shed blood, and in you they have eaten upon the mountains; in your midst they have held wicked plans.

10. Their fathers’ nakedness they uncovered in you; they have afflicted the woman in her unclean period.

11. In you one man committed an abomination with his neighbor’s wife; another incestuously defiled his daughter-in-law, and another afflicted his sister, the daughter of his father.

12. In you they have taken bribes to shed blood; usury and increased pay have you taken, and enriched your neighbors with dishonest gain-and Me you have forgotten, says the Lord God.

13. And behold, I clapped My hands together over your dishonest gain which you have made and over your blood-guilt that is in you.

14. Will your heart endure, or will your hands remain strong in the days that I will deal with you? I, the Lord, have spoken, and I shall perform.

15. I will scatter you among the nations and fling you out into the lands and I will make your impurity completely disappear out of you.

16. And you shall be profaned within yourself before the eyes of the nations, and you shall know that I am the Lord.”

Hoshea (Hosea) Chapter 2 – Verses 1-22

Next Week

Chapter 2

1. And the number of the children of Israel shall be as the sand of the sea, which shall neither be measured nor counted; and it shall come to pass that, instead of saying to them, “You are not My people,” it shall be said to them, “The children of the living God.”

2. And the children of Judah and the children of Israel shall be gathered together, and they shall appoint for themselves one head, and they shall go up from the land, for great is the day of Jezreel.

3. Say to your brethren, “Ammi,” and to your sisters, “Ruhamah.”

4. Strive with your mother, strive, for she is not My wife, and I am not her Husband, and let her remove her harlotries from her face and her adulteries from between her breasts.

5. Lest I strip her naked and leave her as [on] the day she was born; and I make her like a desert, and I set her like an arid land, and cause her to die of thirst.

6. And I will not pity her children for they are children of harlotries.

7. For their mother played the harlot; she who conceived them behaved shamefully, for she said, “I will go after my lovers, those who give my bread and my water, my wool and my flax, my oil and my drinks. “

8. Therefore, behold I will close off your way with thorns, and I make a fence against her, and she shall not find her paths.

9. And she shall pursue her lovers and not overtake them, and she shall seek them and not find them; and she shall say, “I will go and return to my first Husband, for it was better for me then than now.

10. But she did not know that I gave her the corn, the wine, and the oil, and I gave her much silver and gold, but they made it for Baal.

11. Therefore, I will return and take My corn in its time and My wine in its appointed season, and I will separate My wool and My flax, to cover her nakedness.

12. And now, I will bare her disgrace before the eyes of her lovers, and no man shall save her from My hand.

13. And I will terminate all her rejoicing, her festival[s], her new moon[s], and her Sabbath[s], and all her appointed seasons.

14. And I will lay waste her vine[s] and her fig tree[s], [concerning] which she said, “They are my hire, which my lovers have given me,” and I will make them a forest, and the beasts of the field shall devour them.

15. And I will visit upon her the days of the baalim, to whom she burnt incense, and she adorned herself with her earrings and her jewelry, and went after her lovers, and she forgot Me, says the Lord.

16. Therefore, behold I will allure her and lead her into the desert, and I will speak comfortingly to her heart.

17. And I will give her her vineyards from there and the depth of trouble for a door of hope, and she shall dwell there as in the days of her youth, and as the day of her ascent from the land of Egypt.

18. And it shall come to pass on that day, says the Lord, you shall call [Me] Ishi, and you shall no longer call Me Baali.

19. And I will remove the names of the baalim from her mouth, and they shall no longer be mentioned by their name.

20. And I will make a covenant for them on that day with the beasts of the field and with the fowl of the sky and the creeping things of the earth; and the bow, the sword, and war I will break off the earth, and I will let them lie down safely.

21. And I will betroth you to Me forever, and I will betroth you to Me with righteousness and with justice and with loving-kindness and with mercy.

22. And I will betroth you to Me with faith, and you shall know the Lord
